Garry Monk: a play-off challenge that faded late
Garry Monk was Leeds United head coach for the 2016–17 Championship season. Appointed in June 2016, he brought a more competitive edge to a side that had endured years of mid-table finishes. Leeds spent much of the season in the play-off places but ultimately finished seventh.
Appointment and rebuilding
Monk joined Leeds on 2 June 2016, succeeding Steve Evans. A former Swansea City captain and manager, he had previously led Swansea to an eighth-place Premier League finish in 2014–15.
At Leeds, he assembled a stronger Championship side. Important arrivals included Chris Wood, who had joined the previous summer but flourished under Monk, and loan signing Pontus Jansson. Wood scored 27 Championship goals in 2016–17 and won the division’s Golden Boot.
Promotion hopes in 2016–17
Leeds became serious play-off contenders and occupied a top-six position for much of the campaign. Monk’s team combined defensive resilience with Wood’s goals, giving supporters renewed hope of a return to the Premier League.
However, the promotion challenge faltered in the closing weeks. Leeds won just one of their final eight league matches and finished seventh with 75 points, five points behind sixth-placed Fulham.
Departure in May 2017
Monk resigned on 25 May 2017, shortly after Andrea Radrizzani completed his takeover of the club. His departure came as a surprise after a season of clear progress. Leeds subsequently appointed Thomas Christiansen.
Legacy at Leeds
Although Monk did not secure a play-off place, he oversaw Leeds’ strongest league finish in several seasons and restored genuine promotion hopes. His single campaign remains notable for Wood’s prolific scoring and the disappointment of a late-season collapse.
