David Merrington is an English former professional footballer, manager and commentator who was born on January 26, 1945. He played as a centre back for Burnley and Bristol City in the 1960s and 1970s. He served as a caretaker manager at Sunderland in 1978, and Leeds United in 1980.
He was also the manager of Southampton from 1995 to 1996, where he won the Premier League Manager of the Month award in April 1996. He later worked as a commentator for BBC Radio Solent until his retirement in 2022. He is remembered as a loyal and dedicated coach who had a passion for the game.
