David Merrington: Leeds United caretaker manager in 1980
David Merrington’s place in Leeds United history is a brief but important one. He served as caretaker manager in October 1980, during the transition between Jimmy Adamson and Allan Clarke. Although his spell in charge was short, it came at a difficult moment for a club struggling to rediscover the consistency of its great years under Don Revie.
Playing career and early coaching
Born on 26 January 1945, Merrington played professionally as a defender, including spells with Burnley and Bristol City. After his playing career, he moved into coaching and developed a reputation as a dependable member of the backroom staff.
He worked at Sunderland, where he also had a spell as caretaker manager in 1978. Those experiences helped prepare him for another temporary assignment when Leeds needed someone to oversee first-team affairs.
The managerial change at Elland Road
Adamson had initially guided Leeds to fifth place in the First Division in 1978–79, but results and confidence deteriorated. He left in October 1980 after a difficult start to the new campaign. Merrington stepped in while the club arranged a permanent successor.
The caretaker role was never intended as a long-term appointment. Its immediate purpose was to maintain continuity, prepare the players and help Leeds through a change of leadership. The club subsequently appointed former Leeds striker Allan Clarke, who had been building his managerial reputation at Barnsley.
Southampton and the Premier League
Merrington later became closely associated with Southampton, working in coaching roles before taking charge of the first team for the 1995–96 Premier League season. His Southampton side fought a tense battle against relegation and preserved its top-flight status on the final day, finishing above Manchester City on goal difference.
He was named Premier League Manager of the Month for April 1996, recognition of Southampton’s late-season improvement. Although he left the manager’s position after that campaign, the achievement remains a notable part of his coaching career.
Broadcasting and legacy
After coaching, Merrington became a familiar voice to football supporters through his work as a commentator and summariser for BBC Radio Solent. His broadcasting career continued for many years before his retirement in 2022.
Unlike the long-serving managers who shaped entire eras at Elland Road, Merrington is remembered for helping Leeds through a short managerial handover. His later success at Southampton and long career in football broadcasting underline that his contribution to the game extended well beyond those few days in 1980.
