Peter Gunby was an English football player and coach who was born in Leeds on November 20, 1934. He played as a right half for Leeds United, Bradford City and Harrogate Town in the 1950s, but did not make many appearances in the Football League. He later became a manager of Harrogate Town in the 1970s, and then a coach at Huddersfield Town and Leeds United. He also served as a caretaker manager of Leeds twice, in 1985 and 1988, during periods of transition for the club. He was known for his infectious personality and caring attitude, and helped many young players develop their skills and character.
He also oversaw the transformation of a house into an accommodation for academy players, where he provided meals and housekeeping. For his services to football and to improving the lives of others, he was awarded an OBE in 2007. He died on March 26, 2022, at the age of 87, and was fondly remembered by many stars of the game. He was a loyal and dedicated servant of Leeds United, and had the club running through his blood.
